1885 - Gottllieb Daimler - First Motorcycle
You might ask yourself what a motorcycle is doing in this history of automobiles. Well, this motorcycle had an important role and since it had 4 wheels there, we can call it sort of car also :))
In November 1885, Daimler installed a smaller version of this engine in a wooden bicycle, creating the first motorcycle. It was named the "riding car" (Reitwagen). Maybach rode it for three kilometers (two miles) alongside the river Neckar, from Cannstatt to Untertürkheim, reaching 12 kilometres per hour (7 mph). Daimler's son Paul rode this motorcycle from Cannstatt to Unterturkheim and back on November 10, 1885. Daimler used a hot tube ignition system to get his engine speed up to 1000 rpm.
